About Laing O'Rourke

Laing O’Rourke is a $6 billion global engineering and manufacturing-led construction leader, delivering state-of-the-art infrastructure and buildings projects. In Australia, we’ve proudly operated under the Laing O’Rourke banner for over 20 years, building on more than 70 years of local expertise.

Driven by our purpose - pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, in service of humanity - we create safer hospitals, cleaner water, secure defence facilities, and better-connected cities. We also build meaningful careers and inclusive workplaces where people thrive. Backed by global strength and deep local roots, our unique operating model combines cutting-edge technology with modern methods of construction to deliver certainty for clients and transform how infrastructure is engineered and built.

We also own two vertically integrated businesses: Select Plant Australia, the nation’s fourth-largest plant hire company, and Laing O’Rourke Rail Operations, supporting major projects and nationwide rail maintenance.

That’s the Power of Experience.

About the role

We are looking for strong Consultant to Manager level candidates to join the team.

This role is suited to people who enjoy structured problem-solving but want to play a more direct role in shaping critical infrastructure delivery — working directly with the people responsible for planning, procuring and building major infrastructure.

You will work across a mix of client-facing and internal engagements, often in environments that are fast-moving, ambiguous and commercially sensitive. The expectation is not just to analyse problems, but to help teams work through them and land practical outcomes.

Depending on your experience, you may take ownership of defined workstreams, lead small teams, or play a key role in shaping how we approach client problems.

Key Responsibilities

  • The work is varied but typically involves understanding how a project or organisation is operating today, identifying where it is not performing as expected, and helping define what needs to change.
  • You might be working with a project team to understand why delivery is slipping, supporting a client to rethink how a program is governed, helping shape a commercial or delivery strategy for a major opportunity, or working with business leaders to improve how decisions are made, risks are managed and outcomes are delivered.
  • Day-to-day, this involves structuring problems, working through data and documentation, speaking with stakeholders across different levels of an organisation, and translating what you find into clear, practical recommendations. You will spend time both in analysis and in conversations – testing ideas with people who are responsible for delivering outcomes on the ground.
  • You will work closely with colleagues across Laing O’Rourke, drawing on expertise in engineering, construction, commercial, procurement, project delivery and operations to ensure recommendations are grounded in real delivery experience.

About You

  • We are looking for candidates who bring strong consulting fundamentals: structured problem-solving, critical thinking, analytical rigour, clear communication and sound judgement.
  • You should be able to take ambiguous or complex issues, break them down into the right questions, work through data and evidence, and translate your findings into clear, practical recommendations. You should be comfortable moving between analysis and stakeholder conversations – building a fact base, testing ideas, challenging constructively and helping teams make decisions.
  • Strong communication skills are essential. You should be able to distil complex issues into clear, concise materials, write well, develop compelling slides or written outputs, and confidently lead discussions, workshops and stakeholder conversations.
  • You should also bring a practical, commercially grounded mindset. This role suits people who can understand what will work in the real world, not just what looks right on paper, and who can work credibly with senior stakeholders, delivery teams and subject matter experts.

As a guide, we are looking for:

  • Consultant level: around 2–5 years of relevant experience
  • Manager level: around 5–8+ years of relevant experience, including experience leading workstreams, managing stakeholders and taking ownership of deliverables from problem definition through to final recommendation
  • Relevant backgrounds may include consulting, strategy, transformation, operations, commercial, PMO, project controls, major projects, infrastructure, engineering or other complex operating environments.

Why join us

This is an opportunity to build an advisory career in a growing team that combines the pace and ownership of a startup environment with the stability and backing of a major infrastructure business.

You will work on complex, high-impact problems, with direct exposure to how major projects and programs are run. The work is less about producing theoretical outputs and more about helping teams make decisions and move forward.

As the team grows, there is also the opportunity to shape how we work, the types of engagements we take on, and how we build our capability over time – while maintaining a sustainable, balanced way of working.
